Coming this fall: Mendel the Mess Up, a new
middle-grade graphic novel by Terry LaBan
Sympathetic, funny, and warm, this fast-paced graphic novel reminds young readers who feel just a little out of place in their world that sometimes what we think are our weaknesses can actually be our greatest strengths.
"Put Fiddler on the Roof and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in a blender, add a jigger or two of Seinfeld, and the result is this boisterous and affirming graphic novel."
"LaBan’s art exemplifies what the cartoonish style does best: capturing and exaggerating characters’ physical and behavioral foibles and making them both ridiculous and lovable. And, indeed, it rings perfectly with a story all about mistakes, but filled with so much to love."
"Despite the comedic art style, the stakes can be surprisingly high; panels, sometimes unexpectedly, rocket from lighthearted to grim to inspirational."
Terry LaBan knew he wanted to be a cartoonist at the age of six. He went on to contribute comics and illustrations to hundreds of publications, and to write and draw three indie comic book series for Fantagraphics Books and Dark Horse Comics. He also wrote a number of series for DC Vertigo, and Donald Duck comics for Disney Egmont.
His comic strip, “Edge City”, was internationally syndicated by King Features, and appeared in newspapers daily from 2001 to 2015. He's also taught comics and graphic narrative at Jefferson University and the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts.
Terry lives with his wife just outside Philadelphia. He has two kids, two cats, and a studio with nice, big windows.
